Yet the day after its results, Korean semiconductor stocks rebounded by 2% to 3%, and some equipment makers gave back gains the following day. It is a reminder that strong results and a strong share price do not necessarily move at the same pace.

This release did not show that memory demand had weakened. Instead, it made the investor’s questions harder. We need to assess how much further earnings estimates can rise, how long elevated earnings can last, and how much investment they require.

The strength of the cycle is confirmed, but that does not mean every Korean semiconductor company’s earnings and share price will improve by the same amount. The evidence needs to be separated for memory producers, preferred shares, and equipment makers.

Reference: Micron reported FY2026 fourth-quarter results on September 30, 2026, in the United States. U.S. shares are measured at the October 1 regular-session close. Korean share prices are intraday observations from October 2, 14:41 to 14:42 KST. They are not closing prices and do not include later price movements.

Revenue and EPS are set to rise, but the size of the beat is a separate question

First, compare the company’s reported results and outlook on the same basis. EPS and margins are non-GAAP.1

Item

FY2026 Q4 actual

FY2027 Q1 outlook midpoint

Revenue

$54.229 billion

$61.5 billion

Diluted EPS

$33.42

$38.15

Gross margin

87.0%

Approximately 86.25%

The next-quarter revenue outlook is about 13.4% above the prior quarter, and EPS is about 14.2% higher. Adjusted free cash flow this quarter was also $33.2 billion. That does not fit the claim that the improvement exists only in expectations.1

That does not mean these growth rates translate directly into share-price returns. The increase from the year-earlier result and the increase over investor expectations immediately before the announcement are different questions. Revenue exceeded the midpoint of the company’s earlier $50.0 billion outlook by about 8.5%. This is a comparison with company guidance, not a surprise relative to market consensus.2

Testing the claim that estimate upgrades have slowed requires time-series consensus estimates for the same fiscal-year EPS. The estimate immediately before the release and the actual result must also use the same provider and accounting basis. We have not produced a chart of estimate momentum or the size of the earnings surprise without that series. It is a valid hypothesis that estimates may already have caught up with results, but it is not a confirmed finding.

SCAs limit some price increases, but do not fix all revenue

Strategic customer agreements (SCAs) link customers’ long-term purchase commitments with pricing terms. The shares of revenue tied to the pricing terms discussed on the call are measured against expected SCA revenue, not Micron’s total revenue.3

Scope in the company’s disclosure

Exact meaning

26 signed SCAs

More than 35% of expected revenue through 2030

Three-quarters of expected SCA revenue

Pricing framework is defined; most of it has price bands with floors and ceilings

Remaining one-quarter of expected SCA revenue

Prices are negotiated periodically to reflect market prices

This does not mean that 75% of total revenue is at fixed prices. A price band is also different from one fixed price. If existing contracts reach their ceiling, the earnings benefit from further market-price increases may be smaller. But we cannot calculate the scale of that effect without knowing what share of revenue comes from contracts that have reached their ceilings.

These price floors and ceilings were not first disclosed this quarter. On its June 24 FY2026 Q3 call, Micron had already described price ceilings and floors for existing products under large agreements. It also said that premiums for new products could be negotiated separately. The ceiling for existing products should not be extended to new products or all future contracts.4

The investment implications require looking at both the upside and downside. The agreements may limit some gains from further price increases, while purchase commitments and price floors may support earnings during a downturn. Whether the market assigns a higher price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple for that stability is a separate question. Contracts do not automatically justify a higher multiple.

A lower margin outlook next quarter is not enough to call the cycle over

The margin outlook falls from 87.0% to 86.25%, which may raise concerns that margins have peaked. But Micron explained that sales of inventory carrying manufacturing incentive costs would affect the quarter, and it expects FY2027 Q1 to be the low point for margins in that fiscal year. The company expects price increases to moderate.3

The company’s explanation and realized results should be kept distinct. Even so, there is not enough evidence to read this release as confirmation that memory prices are falling. Micron said it had completed agreements covering the vast majority of its 2027 HBM supply, with significant year-over-year price increases.3

Investors need to test two things: whether shipments and product mix can lift earnings even as price increases moderate, and whether those earnings remain as cash after large investments. Both the pace of earnings growth and its duration matter.

Shares rebounded after the announcement, while the next day’s reactions diverged

On October 1, Micron closed in the United States at $1,097.39, up 3.03%. In the Korean regular session on the same date, Samsung Electronics rose 2.79% and SK hynix gained 3.21%. It is inaccurate to say the positive results had no effect at all.56

What differences appeared in the Korean market the next day? The returns below are daily changes from the reference prices displayed by Naver Finance.7

-0.37%

Different reactions within the sector

This table does not establish causality for the sector as a whole. It does show why it is difficult to assess the strength of the positive news by treating memory producers, equipment makers, and component suppliers as one group. The observation window after the release is also short. Two days of price action are not enough to confirm a trend change or that the positive news has run its course.

High interest rates and energy prices are also part of the backdrop. The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield was 5.250% in an observation at 13:19 KST on October 2. Brent crude settled at $102.31 the previous day, up 4.37%. Even if earnings estimates rise, high discount rates can compress the multiple investors assign to share prices. This is a possible explanation, not an estimate of each factor’s contribution to that day’s price movements.89

The memory outlook is relevant to Korea, while equipment orders need confirmation

Micron’s disclosures are a starting point for reviewing Korean companies. They are not a substitute for company-specific results.

Company or group

Evidence from Micron

Additional facts to verify in Korea

Samsung Electronics and SK hynix

Memory supply constraints and HBM pricing leverage

Company-specific contract prices, customer qualification, yields, product mix, and guidance

Samsung Electronics Preferred

Exposure to the same company earnings as the common shares

Differences in trading flows by share class, dividends, and eligibility for share repurchases

Equipment makers

Need for long-term capacity expansion

Actual orders by customer, equipment selection, and delivery and revenue-recognition timing

Component and test companies

Business opportunities from the transition to higher-performance memory

Usage by product, market share, pricing, and margins

In particular, Micron’s SCA pricing terms should not be applied directly to Samsung Electronics or SK hynix. There is no evidence that their customer mixes and contract terms are the same. The common effect of supply shortages must be assessed separately from each company’s competitive position.

Samsung Electronics Preferred has another distinction. Samsung Electronics’ August 21 announcement of a roughly KRW 15 trillion share repurchase applies only to common shares. Its purpose is employee stock compensation. It should not be interpreted as the same direct buying demand for preferred shares or as a plan to cancel all the shares acquired. This difference does not explain the entire decline in the preferred shares that day.10

For equipment makers, consider the mix and timing of investment. Micron expects first-half FY2027 capital spending of about $25 billion, with more in the second half. Most of the increase is construction spending, for additional cleanroom capacity expected mainly from the second half of 2028 onward. The company also plans to pull forward some equipment spending, but total capital spending cannot be converted into near-term revenue for a particular Korean equipment maker.3

Estimates, cash flow, and Korean orders will shape the next assessment

Evidence that could strengthen the bullish case includes further upgrades to same-fiscal-year earnings estimates, continued strength in contracts and pricing, and cash remaining after higher investment. In Korea, investors need company-specific results and contract competitiveness at Samsung Electronics and SK hynix, as well as actual orders for equipment makers. Investor demand after the share repurchase is another point to verify.

The current interpretation should be reconsidered if memory prices fall, contract terms weaken, margin outlooks are repeatedly lowered, or orders are delayed. Even with stable contracts, cash left for shareholders may fall short of expectations if costs and capital spending grow faster.

These results support a strong industry outlook. For share prices to rise further, Micron needs to earn more than expected or the market must accept that earnings will last longer. The same questions matter at the next Korean semiconductor earnings releases.
