Regime: Korea — Bear | United States — Neutral

Korea’s growth-risk driver has pushed the KOSPI down 4.3% over five sessions. Market breadth is narrow: only 14% of stocks above their 50-day moving average. The US regime reads Neutral with no dominant single pressure. The KR-US divergence is wide enough to keep a cautious posture on Korea market exposure.

Market Wrap

July 20 was an unambiguous risk-off session in Korea. By mid-afternoon the KOSPI was trading near 6,519, down roughly 4.4% on the day, with KOSDAQ underperforming on a five-session basis.

Two forces drove the sell-off simultaneously. First, model competition from Kimi K3 reignited concerns about AI CapEx efficiency across the semiconductor and infrastructure chain. TSMC’s reconfirmation of AI demand strength and expanded Arizona investment was objectively positive for the long-run HBM thesis — but the market was in a “sell the good news” mode, with valuation de-rating narratives dominating intraday price action. Second, Brent crude pushing above $88 on Hormuz corridor risk added an independent discount factor to risk assets broadly.

The sector rotation that followed was defensive rather than risk-seeking. Energy, financials, and shipbuilding showed relative resilience, but this was a flight to lower-beta names, not genuine re-entry of appetite for growth.

Flow highlights: In the two largest market-cap names, foreign investors were net buyers against institutional selling. In Samsung Electronics (005930.KS), foreigners absorbed roughly +276B KRW while institutions sold −352B KRW. In SK Hynix (000660.KS), the gap was wider: foreign buying at +612B KRW against institutional selling of −934B KRW. The pattern — strong-hand accumulation against momentum-driven institutional exit — is worth noting, but price has not yet confirmed a bottom.

Program trading was constructive on the margin (+789B KRW, basis at +6.13), providing some mechanical support. But with breadth at 14% above the 50-day average, this is a narrow leadership market. Confirmed breakouts above 20-day price ranges with sustained institutional follow-through remain the entry condition — single-day bounces in this tape are typically noise.

Tiger Electric (219130.KQ) and TSE (131290.KQ) appeared as technically notable names on the discovery scanner (relative strength ranked 97+), but the breadth conditions argue for waiting on confirmed price and flow before treating these as actionable setups.

APR (278470.KQ) — Rank #1 · Score 68.5

APR is a Korean beauty and direct-to-consumer skincare company. The capital efficiency profile is exceptional: ROE of 65.0% with operating profit growing +197.9% YoY. What makes today’s screener signal unusually broad is the evidence count — seven independent evidence families (quality, earnings cycle, earnings event, flow, market activity, expectations revision, and official catalyst), the highest in the 93-name universe. Foreign and qualified-institutional investors absorbed roughly 17.9B KRW in retail selling over the past five sessions. DART filings from July 16 include a dividend decision and record-date closing — a concrete institutional catalyst. The checks before promoting this further: short interest sits at 13.1% and program flow is negative (−20.9%), both of which can amplify drawdowns if broader risk-off extends. The quality and earnings trajectory is the strongest argument here; the short-side overhang is the main counter to watch.

Gigavis (420770.KQ) — Rank #2 · Score 67.2

Gigavis makes automated optical inspection equipment for display panels. The operating leverage story is sharp: OP growth of +777.2% YoY and margin expansion of +29.9 percentage points place it firmly in the Cycle Rerating bucket. Consensus estimate revisions are still moving upward (composite z-score of +1.88). Two supply contract filings on DART from July 6 and 7 anchor the “why now” catalyst. Technical risk factors are relatively contained — short interest at 4.7%, positive program flow (+25.5%), foreign buyers active. The softness is on the quality axis: ROE at 7.3% does not reach structural compounder levels, which means this is an earnings acceleration candidate rather than a durable franchise story. The next research question is whether current order visibility supports the margin level through 2H 2026.

SK Hynix (000660.KS) — Rank #3 · Score 54.1

The highest-volume name on the KOSPI today (volume rank #1) with the most complex evidence profile. Quality metrics are unambiguous: ROE 35.6%, OP YoY +101.2%, margin expansion +13.1pp. The HBM demand thesis is intact — TSMC’s AI capex reconfirmation is a proxy demand signal. An IR event filing on DART from July 15 is the official catalyst anchor. Three risk-category filings in the same lookback window (including an equity issuance result disclosure) are the counter. Foreign investors were net buyers today at +612B KRW, absorbing institutional pressure — a signal of smart-money conviction at current levels. The core research question here is not about business quality, which is established, but about whether today’s price already prices in the HBM upgrade cycle or whether the technical downtrend needs to stabilize before market exposure can be added with confidence. The breadth data argues for waiting on the 50-day level to confirm before treating the name as an entry candidate.
